Biography

Philip Gayle has been improvising with acoustic instruments since age 3, growing up in a home filled with guitars and a baby grand piano. After having played in rock, folk, blues, and ‘jam’ bands from age 10 through high school, he studied finger picking style guitar. After moving to Japan at 18, he was turned on to funk and free jazz, later utilizing extended technique in his performances. He released his first album of experimental free-improvisation in 1997 titled ‘Keguribap.’ Since then he has released several albums of the same kind of improvised ‘strings and other things.’ He tours sporadically and still plays ‘conventional’ music, playing guitar and mandolin for folk, rock, and country artists in the USA and Japan and elsewhere.
